There
are really two issues regarding the Clough/Catudal families. The
first is the issue of the seemingly spontaneous use of the Clough
name by some members of the Catudal family.
There is a family story that was passed
down to explain the reason that some of the members of a Catudal
family started going by Clough. The story goes that Jean-Marie
“Joseph” Catudal dit St-Jean (1823-1906) [2619] was actually born
a Clough. His father was an English soldier and had moved the family
to live on the Richelieu river near Fort Chambly. Upon arriving home
one day Joseph discovered his family had been massacred by the
Indians. He escaped and a Catudal dit St-Jean family took him in.
Joseph changed his name to his 'adoptive' family's name. Years later,
he found out that some of his family had indeed survived so he
changed his name back to Clough.
There
are problems with that story. Firstly, Indian attacks in Quebec
during Joseph's lifetime where rare to non-existent, and certainly
wiping out families did not occur – not there, not in that
time-frame. There were Indian attacks but the closest to the east
they occurred was Minnesota and as far south as Florida, at least as
far as I can determine – both locations being 2,000 kilometres from
the area where Joseph lived during this time.
Probably
the most important point is in looking at how Québec record keeping
was maintained and looking at French naming conventions. Let me first
preface this next part by saying, there have always been the fudging
of the books, as it were. It probably was a rare occurrence and one
that would have been done to spare the embarrassment of a family but
it was not a common practice.
Having
said that, when a child was 'taken-in' that child kept their birth
name. They may have taken the adoptive family's surname as a dit name
but they almost certainly would have kept their birth name as well.
When that child then went on to marry then their real parent's names
would have gone on the record. Let me give you a for-instance: If a
child born to a couple were to lose his mother as an infant and the
father were to remarry a few months later, when that child would have
gone on to marry the parent's names given on the marriage record
would have been his birth parent's names. Even if he had been adopted
by his new mother, even if she was the only mother he ever knew, the
name on any of his official church records would have shown his birth
mother's name.
I have Joseph's baptism, marriage and
burial records and none of them have him listed with the name Clough.
His baptism is entered sequentially with the others for the area –
it was not inserted later or added to the registry some years later.
This means that he was with the family from birth, which means he
could not have come home to find his Clough family massacred by
Indians.
Joseph
did use the Clough name on at least one occasion. One of those
occasions was the 1871 Canadian Census. He appears later on the 1901
Canadian Census as Joseph St-Jean.
Taking
a look at his children, some of them took the Clough name, some the
St-Jean or St. John name and some the Catudal name. They wavered back
and forth between those names.
I'm
speculating on why this happened and believe it very much has to do
with the Patriot's Rebellion of 1837-1838. It reminds me of something
similar which occurred with another Catudal family.
When
Joseph Catudal dit St-Jean/St. John/Clough was about 15 years old the
rebellion was in full swing. The rebellion divided many families.
Parts of the family who were very much on the side of the French
cause were enraged at the parts of their family who sided with the
English and visa versa. The story concocted by one Catudal family to
distance themselves from the other Catudal families has them appear
as if they came to Québec in the early 1800's, from France, and were
not related to the Québec Catudals. These family members sided with
the English. I think it is very likely that Joseph also sympathized
with the British and as such came up with a story to distance himself
from the Catudal Patriots. I can't prove this but the timing is right
and is supported by the paper trail.
The
Catudal dit St-Jeans who lived in the Richelieu river near Fort
Chambly moved away from that area in the 1700's. A few moved close-by
to St-Mathias but by the 1800's had moved even farther away. The area
suggested by the story of how Joseph ended up with the St-Jean name
doesn't fit with the area mentioned in the time-frame mentioned.
I've
checked the areas where Clough baptisms, death and marriages occurred
in Québec and have not been able to locate any such events occurring
in the Chambly or St-Mathias areas. They might have but I can't
locate any. There are only two major areas where one sees Clough
families and they are quite a distance away from one another and from
the Chambly and St-Mathias areas. Those places are the St-Célestin,
Nicolet, Québec/St-Édouard, Gentilly, Nicolet, Québec areas and
the Stanbridge, Missisquois, Québec area.
What
is very interesting is that when Joseph or his children used the
Clough name it was always either in a non-Catholic church or on a
Census. They always went back to the Catudal/St-Jean/St. John names
when they appeared in Catholic church record, always.
The
second issue is that Joseph Clough aka Joseph Catudal dit St-Jean
from the above story was linked by a researcher in the mid 1970's to
a rather large Clough family who came over from England very early
on. The researcher mixed-up Benjamin-Franklin Clough (abt.
1806-1883)'s son Joseph with our Joseph Catudal dit St-Jean aka St.
John aka Clough. This mix-up stuck and there are a number of people
on the Internet who have propagated the wrong information at face
value.
There
were 3 men who went by the name of Joseph Clough during this time in
history who were born in a similar time-frame. The person researching
their side of the Clough family mixed up the three. They settled on
our Joseph presumably because they couldn't find their Joseph
Clough's primary records and because the dates sort of were close.
They ignored the data that spoke against such an assumption such as
the use by most of Joseph's family of the name St-Jean or St. John;
they skipped mentioning that. Also, they fudged the area of Joseph's
birth by placing his birth in the area of Québec where their Clough
family lived.
I've
researched both Clough families mentioned above and can find no
evidence, not one single shred, showing that the one Clough family
from Nicolet, Québec came into contact with the St-Jean/Clough
family from Stanbridge, Québec. Anything is possible but if they had
then one could expect to see evidence in the historical record.
At
the end of this document you will see a family report for both Clough
families and will be able to see that one had nothing to do with the
other.
In
closing: I can't tell why Jean-Marie “Joseph” Catudal dit
St-Jean's part of the Catudal family used the Clough name at times. I
can only guess that it may very well have had something to do with
the Patriot Rebellion as this wasn't completely unheard of at that
time in history. I know that the French who sided with the British
often also changed their religious practices to 'fit-in' and one sees
them suddenly showing-up in Anglican and Methodist church records.
What is worth noting is that in almost every case, when this
particular family celebrated a baptism, marriage or burial they did
so back in the Catholic church.

Notes: Taken from FindaGrave.com, maintained by Mavanee:
Joseph
Arthur Clough and his future wife Evelyn Mary Mitchell met at a
dance. He married Evelyn on November 13, 1916 at Pocatello, Idaho.
Joe was engaged in farming for 10 years. Quitting farming he then
moved to West Yellowstone, Montana and was manager of the Yellowstone
Hotel. They then came back to Shelley, Idaho. Joe and Evelyn raised
white leghorn chickens. They had about a hundred of these chickens.
They would take the eggs to the store to sell to buy groceries. On
June 26, 1954, Joe passed away. His parents were Jehirin (Frank)
Clough and Katherine Bodreau.21

General
Notes: As taken from FindaGrave maintained by Mavanee:
Evelyn
Mary Mitchell Clough was born on October 6, 1896 in Shelley, Bingham,
Idaho in a house that has since been torn down. She was the second
child born to John Henry and Elizabeth Ann Hull Mitchell. She had
five brothers and two sisters. She attended school in Shelley and her
best friend was her cousin, Nina Hull. Her young life was spent
living with her grandparents. She walked 2 1/2 miles to school each
day. Evelyn helped her grandmother, Ann Hull Mitchell, with housework
and outside chores. Her grandma was old and grandpa was lame so they
could not do very much. There was always a lot of work to do as she
was growing up. Evelyn thinned beets, pulled weeds, picked potatoes,
shocked grain, shocked hay and washed clothes on a washboard with a
tub of water and a bar of soap. She was 20 years old when she met her
husband, Joe Clough at a dance. They were married on November 13,
1916 at Pocatello, Idaho. Evelyn never learned to drive a car. She
was an excellent cook. On June 26, 1954 her husband passed away. In
order to pay her way, Evelyn went to work in the potato houses. At
this time she was also taking care of her aged mother. This she did
for 14 years. Her mother died in 1964. Evelyn also cared for her
sister, Edith's, son who was born crippled. Evelyn took care of this
little boy for five years until he, too, passed away. Joe and Evelyn
never had any children of their own, but they considered all the
nieces, nephews, cousins, their children. She had a beautiful smile
and a happy countenance. Her yard was beautiful. She grew an abundant
garden and had a large raspberry patch. You could always find her
outside picking berries or working in her yard and garden. She was
never idle. Even though she is gone, she leaves behind a sweet memory
to all of us who knew her. She will be missed by everyone.21

have Joseph's original baptism record I've kept his date of birth as
per that document.
On
Hector's WWI Draft Registration Card he has his birth recorded as 18
March 1879. I have his baptism record and he was born as I have
entered it. It is usual that a birth year is off by one or two years.
It is unusual to be off by more, unless the records are for pre-1800
births, then it is more common than not. Incidentally, he was not able
to sign his name to his WWI draft card. He placed his mark and it was
signed by his witness William Goodell.
Death
Notes: Hector is seen on the 1940 US Federal Census for Manchester,
Hillsborough, New Hampshire and is noted as being married with the

Joseph CLOUGH [7035]1
was born Cal 17752
and was baptized on 15 June 1851 in St-Célestin, Nicolet, Québec,
Canada. Another name for Joseph was Joseph CLUFF.1
Birth
Notes: He converted to Catholic when he was 76 years of age.

on 17 October 1805 in Gilmanton, Belknap, New Hampshire, United
States.3
Mary was born Cal 1783 and was baptized on 23 March 1851 in
St-Célestin, Nicolet, Québec, Canada.2
Baptism
Notes: She converted to Catholic at the age of 68.
Children
from this marriage were:
+ 2 M i. Benjamin-Franklin
CLOUGH [7002] was born
about 1806 in New York, USA4
and was buried on 4 October 1883 in St-Célestin, Nicolet, Québec,
Canada.
3 F ii. Marie
Anna CLOUGH [7037] was

Benjamin-Franklin CLOUGH [7002]
(Joseph

about 1806 in New York, USA4
and was buried on 4 October 1883 in St-Célestin, Nicolet, Québec,
Canada. Other names for Benjamin-Franklin were Benjamin François
CLOUGH1
and Benjamin F. CLUFF.1
Birth
Notes: Benjamin-Franklin's burial record states that he was 98 at the
time of his death. On-line at Ancestry.com and with-in the document I
received from Mavanee Steele the year of birth is given as "1806",
which agrees with the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Canadian Census.
Further,
on the 1861 and 1871 Canadian Censuses it has his place of birth as
Québec but on the 1881 Canadian Census it has his place of birth as
the USA. No State is given. Most have assumed that he was born in New
Hampshire because his parents were married there but I have gone page
by page through birth records looking for him and either missed
something or he may not have been born in New Hampshire. I also did
this for Vermont and Massachusetts.
I
have put New York as his place of birth as on one of his children's
Census records it has this as his place of birth. He may have been
born in Québec but I could find no record after searching the
correct time-frame and going page by page through the various
possible churches.
